Scott Straub’s excellent research begins the story April 1, 1757, but Garland R Quarles thinks the story starts August 29, 1756 or earlier.
.
The account book of Colonel George Washington was reviewed by Garland R Quarles in his book, George Washington and Winchester Virginia 1748-1758, Volume VIII, Winchester-Frederick County Historical Society Papers, 1974.
.
On Page 37 Quarles notes the entry by Washington:
.
August 29, 1756 – Paid a Dutchman for a bucket to the Well.
.
Quarles adds: “No doubt the Well at Fort Loudoun.”
.
So activity on the Well could have started some time earlier in August, as no one is paid before the job or on time.
