A big story.

In fact you will always learn

something new in this story.

.

We, in Winchester VA,

celebrate George Washington’s Birthday

every year

with an extra dazzle

of appreciation for his

10 year concentrated presence

in this town,

even representing it

from 1758 to 1761 (was elected to a 2nd term for Frederick Co in 1761 but went to Fairfax C0 to represent them) in the House of Burgesses.

.

George Washington picked this western frontier town as the safest forward headquarters to defend against the French and Indians, not liking the isolation and exposure afflicting Fort Cumberland.

Scotland had already partly made the change: the year began on 1 January in 1600. As a result of the Act, Scotland adopted the Gregorian calendar in 1752 http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Calendar_(New_Style)_Act_1750
.

Thomas Jefferson, who lived during the time that the British Isles and colonies eventually converted to the Gregorian calendar, instructed that his tombstone bear his date of birth in the Old Style and his date of death in the New Style.[22] At Jefferson’s birth the difference was eleven days between the Julian and Gregorian calendars; thus his birthday of 2 April in the Old Style is 13 April in the New Style. Similarly, George Washington is nowadays officially reported as having been born on 22 February 1732, rather than on 11 February 1731/32 O.S.[23

CALENDAR OLD STYLE AND NEW STYLE

.

George Washington was born in Virginia on February 11, 1731, according to the then-used Julian calendar. In 1752, however, Britain and all its colonies adopted the Gregorian calendar which moved Washington’s birthday a year and 11 days to February 22, 1732.

The Gregorian Calendar was first introduced in 1582 in some European countries. However, many countries used the Julian Calendar much longer. Turkey was the last country to officially switch to the new system on January 1, 1927.

The reason why the Julian Calendar was out of step with the tropical year was the rule it used to define a Leap Year. The Julian Calendar had only one rule to determine whether a year would have 29 days in February instead of 28. If the year could be divided by 4 then it was considered to be a Leap Year. The Gregorian Calendar on the other hand has a more complicated rule for calculating what years will be Leap Years:

  • The year must be evenly divisible by 4;
  • If the year can be evenly divided by 100, it is not a Leap Year, unless;
  • The year is also evenly divisible by 400. Then it is a Leap Year.

At the recommendation of the Committee, chaired by Henry Clay of the Senate and Philemon Thomas of the House, Congress adjourned on February 22, 1832 out of respect for Washington’s memory and in commemoration of his birth.

Washington’s Birthday, however, did not become a legal holiday until January 31, 1879.

MORE DETAIL ON THE 1750 ACT OF PARLIAMENT MAKING THE CALENDAR CHANGE

George Washington birthday Feb 22, 1732 (old system Feb 11, 1731)
a) The provisions of the British Calendar (New Style) Act 1750, implemented in 1752, changing to the Gregorian calendar with the start of the year on January 1 (it had been March 25). These changes resulted in dates being moved forward 11 days, and for those between January 1 and March 25, an advance of one year.

c) Great link explaining all of this and more – http://www.cree.name/genuki/dates.htm
.

d) 1751 was a short year of 282 days, running from 25 March to 31 December. 1752 began on 1 January …
.

e) was advanced by 11 days: Wednesday 2 September 1752 was followed by Thursday 14 September 1752.
.

f) The year 1752 was thus a short year (355 days) as well….
.

g) Scotland had already partly made the change: the year began on 1 January in 1600. As a result of the Act, Scotland adopted the Gregorian calendar in 1752 http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Calendar_(New_Style)_Act_1750
.

h) For example William III of England arrived at Brixham in England on 5 November (Julian calendar), after setting sail from the Netherlands on 11 November (Gregorian calendar), in 1688. For this reason, letters concerning diplomacy and international trade sometimes bore both old and new style dates to prevent confusion …
.

i) Thomas Jefferson, who lived during the time that the British Isles and colonies eventually converted to the Gregorian calendar, instructed that his tombstone bear his date of birth in the Old Style and his date of death in the New Style.[22] At Jefferson’s birth the difference was eleven days between the Julian and Gregorian calendars; thus his birthday of 2 April in the Old Style is 13 April in the New Style. Similarly, George Washington is nowadays officially reported as having been born on 22 February 1732, rather than on 11 February 1731/32 O.S.[23

k) Scotland had already partly made the change: the year began on 1 January in 1600 BUT IT STILL HAD TO MOVE 11 DAYS FORWARD WHEN IT JOINED ENGLAND IN 1752
